The Effect

by Lucy Prebble

Directed by Maryann Green

Emilee Foster
Avis Judd
Jon Thuerbach,
and Steve Wood

“I can't tell the difference between who I am and a side effect.”

Connie and Tristan can’t hide how they feel around each other: Hearts thumping, sleepless nights, and a slightly ill excitement. They’ve fallen for one another and fallen hard—unless their chemistry is a side-effect of an antidepressant they’re taking as clinical trial participants. The trial’s supervising doctors must untangle the ethical implications of Connie and Tristan's illicit relationship. “The Effect” is a passionate and provocative look at the mysteries of attraction.

Contains adult language and themes.

“The Effect” is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York.

Once again I’m honored to work with such a talented cast, crew, and staff here at LTW. I think this show will hit close to home for many of us on a number of levels. In and age when there’s a pill for everything we sometimes have to wonder if we’re no more than a jumble of chemical reactions that can be made “better, faster, stronger” through the miracle of modern science.

Are our feelings no more than a biological response to the world around us? How can you tell if your feelings are real? And what price do we pay, and to whom, for using medicine to make us Better? This play doesn’t have the answers, but rather each character gives the audience a different possible response to these questions.

It’s been an amazing experience exploring this world with the cast and crew for the past six weeks. Enjoy the journey.
